EECS Strategic Plan

Strategic Plan - EECS Department

Below is a summary of the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering Impact 2018 Strategic Goals 1, 2 and 3.

In concert with the first three COE goals, a list of key indicators and expectations for each of these goals is provided. This list serves as a guide to the department as the faculty and staff work towards their individual and collective aspirations. To optimally support these endeavors, the Department believes it needs to hire one tenure track CS assistant professor and two tenure track EE assistant professors in the coming years.

Strategic Goal 1: Enhance academic excellence through relevant programs, engaged learners, and continuous improvement of student learning.

These new professors will be required to:

  1. participate in national teaching/learning workshops
  2. lead and/or present at national, university or college-related teaching/learning/advising workshops.
  3. consider the regional workforce needs and engage with industry through company sponsored projects (senior design)
  4. participate in all assessment activity that will lead towards continuous program improvement of their programs.
  5. recruit international undergraduate and graduate students
  6. recruit women and minority students
  7. improve undergraduate student retention
  8. assist with student placement through industry connections
  9. promote SDSU honors program
  10. advise students about regional, state and national scholarships and fellowships
  11. encourage student participation in regional, national and international events

Teaching areas needed in CS:

  1. Database Systems
  2. Network and Computer Security (Cyber Security)
  3. Computer Architecture (Engineering)

Teaching areas needed in EE:

  1. Computer Engineering
  2. Controls and Communications Engineering
  3. Biomedical Engineering and Advanced Electronics

Strategic Goal 2: Advance new knowledge, innovation and technology transfer to promote economic development for the state, region and nation.

These new professors will be required to:

  1. develop a strong research program that is able to provide and sustain funding for M.S. and Ph.D. (EE) students
  2. develop research that leads towards invention disclosures, royalty-bearing IP licenses and/or new start-up companies
  3. publish journal and conference papers in peer-reviewed scholarly venues

Research areas needed in CS:

  1. Strengthen and/or complement existing areas of research in CS and develop new areas and collaborations with other university research centers
  2. Large Data Sets, including medical image processing, satellite image processing, social information and/or precision agriculture
  3. Computer Security, including cloud computing and smart power grid concerns
  4. Machine Learning, including data mining techniques for finding patterns in large bodies of data, finding similar medical images from data warehouse, improving control of stochastic and nonlinear dynamic systems through reinforcement feedback; learning robot control strategies; finding patterns in large bodies of data represented in graphical form, including social networks; extracting or retrieving information in natural language; classification of genetic data; and using learning methods for improving discrete optimization algorithms.

Research areas needed in EE:

  1. Strengthen and/or complement existing areas of research, including micro and nanoelectronic materials and devices, power and energy systems and image processing
  2. Biomedical research in MEMS, nanoMEMS, or microfluidics in collaboration with the Chemistry or Biology departments, and maximize use of existing research laboratories, including cleanroom, chemistry, laser and characterization labs
  3. Controls and communications research applied to power and energy systems or precision agriculture
  4. Image processing with emphasis in the satellite remote sensing or biomedical areas

Strategic Goal 3: Extend outreach through collaborative partnerships and engagement with academic units, public entities and industry.

These new professors will be required to:

  1. strengthen and/or develop industry partnerships with existing companies (EROS, CPSS Members, Sanford/Mayo/Avera, Raven, AGCO), and new companies with needs related to our research strengths
  2. develop existing and new relationships with regional and national companies to help improve participation in our career fairs
  3. participate in and develop/host regional and national workshops, seminars, courses and conferences
  4. assist with and promote K-12 STEM outreach events

Outreach areas needed in CS:

  1. Develop and strengthen partnership with EROS, Mayo, City Bank and AGCO
  2. Develop relationships with regional companies to expand student opportunities for internships and full-time employment
  3. Contribute in the development and support of the CS Program Design Competition, BEST Robotics, ACM/UPE and other related-events

Outreach areas needed in EE:

  1. Develop and strengthen partnership with EROS, CPSS Members, Raven, Sanford and Mayo
  2. Develop relationships with regional companies to expand student opportunities for internships and full-time employment
  3. Contribute in the development and support of the Robotics Club, EE Summer Camp, BEST Robotics, IEEE/HKN and other related-events
