Undergraduate Program

The Biology and Microbiology Department offers coursework leading to the Bachelor's degree with majors in Biology, Biology Secondary Education Specialization, Human Biology, Biotechnology, and Microbiology. Flexibility in the coursework allows you to combine these majors with choices in pre-professional programs (see below) or with a second major or even multiple minors.

The Department offers a program for teaching in secondary schools and high schools through substitution of education courses for general electives (Biology major only). A common set of core courses are required for Biology, Human Biology, Biotechnology and Microbiology majors. These core courses include 2 semesters of a majors-level introductory biology course, 2 semesters of a genetics and cell biology, 1 semester of general microbiology, four semesters of chemistry, two semesters of mathematics, one semester of physics and 2 seminar courses. The first seminar course is a freshman success course and the second a career development course that should be taken during a student's first year.

Students who graduate from SDSU's Biology & Microbiology Department are successful in many of the following career fields:

  • Physicians
  • Researchers
  • Educators
  • Business Leaders
  • Innovators
