FGCF Governance

The day-to-day operations of the SDSU-FGCF is currently managed by a part-time facilities manager (Dr. Liping Gu, FGCF Manager). The FGCF coordinator (Dr. Ryan Hanson) is responsible for supervising Dr. Gu and for interpreting and implementing policies established by the FGCF governing body. The FGCF coordinator must be a member of the SDSU faculty and is chosen by the FGCF advisory committee, but serves at the discretion of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station Director. The FGCF governing body currently consists of one representative from the following departments:

  1. College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences
    1. Department of Animal Science (Michael Gonda)
    2. Department of Dairy and Food Science (Sanjeev Anand)
    3. Department of Agronomy, Horticulture, and Plant Science (Anne Fennell)
    4. Department of Agronomy, Horticulture, and Plant Science (Senthil Subramanian)
    5. Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences (Feng Li)
    6. Department of Natural Resource Management (Katie Bertrand)
  2. College of Natural Sciences
    1. Department of Biology & Microbiology (Volker Brozel)
    2. Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry (open)
  3. College of Education and Human Sciences
    1. Department of Health and Nutritional Sciences (Igor Sergeev)
  4. College of Pharmacy & Allied Health Professions
    1. Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences (Omathanu Perumal)
  5. Centers
    1. Center for Bioprocessing Research and Development (Bruce Bleakley)
    2. Center for Drought Tolerance Biotechnology (David Clay)

The FGC coordinator is the chairman of the committee. At the present time, a department is given a representative on the advisory committee if at least one of their faculty are using the facility, and if someone from the department is willing to serve on the committee. The responsibilities of the advisory committee include:

  1. choosing the director (every 2 years) and a search committee for the FGC manager (when needed)
  2. approving the FGC user policies and pricing/budget each year
  3. attending meetings as requested by the director
  4. providing prioritized recommendations for the purchase of new equipment

Representatives to the advisory committee are selected each year (at the beginning of the fall semester) by each department head in consultation with user members within the department. They will serve a one year term that is renewable.
