Dennis B. Micko started his consulting engineering career in Minneapolis where he worked for Bruch & Morrow for a year after graduating from South Dakota State University. He returned to J.T. Banner and Associates, Inc., in Brookings in 1970 where he had worked as a graduate student. He worked more than 34 years at Banner and Associates, Inc. and rose in the ranks from a junior design engineer to the president and chairman of the board and managed the Brookings office. 

Micko was a licensed professional engineer in the states of South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska and Wyoming. He was active in several professional organizations including the American Society of Civil Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers, the American Council of Engineering Companies of South Dakota and served as president for each of the groups at the branch or chapter level and at the State level. He was the original chairman of the Registration Law Task Force which later became the South Dakota Design Professionals Coalition. He was selected as the Outstanding Engineer by the South Dakota Engineering Society in 1999. Micko was active in the Brookings community having served in numerous leadership roles and was an active high school and college sports official for over 33 years.
