The Early Childhood Education (ECE) Major prepares professionals who work in educational settings with children to promote their cognitive, physical, emotional, and social development. Program content includes the theory and practice of working with children and their families and communities.
This important responsibility demands an understanding of The Elementary Education program and prepares graduates to teach students in the elementary grades, including kindergarten through eighth grade. Program content includes the theory and practice of modern teaching methods, child development, and multiple content subjects (literacy, mathematics, science, arts, health, and physical education.
The Secondary Teacher Education program prepares students to teach in an academic major and/or other fields in which they are appropriately prepared. Students complete the requirements for a B.S. or B.A. degree in an academic major before or while meeting the requirements for South Dakota teacher certification.

Special education teachers work with students who have a wide range of intellectual, physical, sensory, emotional, and mental abilities and neurodivergent students.
