This message serves as an invitation to you and your talented singers to participate in SDSU Choral Day’s ELEMENTARY FESTIVAL HONOR CHOIR. The EFHC is an independent honor choir of 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students who are chosen by recorded audition.
We are pleased to announce that nationally recognized conductor Barbara Sletto. Sletto is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Heartland Youth Choir of Des Moines. Barbara is an Assistant Professor at Drake University in Des Moines where she conducts the Drake Women's Chorale.
Prior to her work with the Heartland Youth Choir, she was the Artistic Director of the Iowa Youth Chorus, the Des Moines Children's Choruses, the Anderson Area Children's Choir of Anderson, Indiana, and the Lakes Treble Choir of Minnesota. Barbara has also guest conducted at various summer choir camps throughout the United States.
Barbara completed a Masters of Arts in Music Education with a Kodaly emphasis from the University of St. Thomas in St.Paul, Minnesota, and is trained in Orff and Dalcroze methodology. She has fulfilled twelve commissioned works for treble choirs, and has published with Plymouth, Colla Voce, and Alliance publishers.
The South Dakota Elementary Festival Honor Choir is being held in conjunction with the 50thAnnual South Dakota Choral Day held on the SDSU campus on February 7, 2019. The choir is comprised of young singers from across South Dakota.
1. Students must be in the 4th, 5th, or 6th grade.
2. Students must be recommended by their school music teacher, director, or private instructor
3. Teachers and students must work together to submit an audition form and audition CD.
4. A $5 registration fee is required of each student that auditions and must accompany the audition form and CD.
5. Students chosen to be part of the Elementary Honor Choir must be accompanied by their music teacher on the day of the festival.
Students selected for the Elementary Honor Choir in Brookings will practice during the day. The concert begins at 4:45 pm. An additional charge of $30 per student is assessed upon acceptance into the honor choir. The charge covers the cost of a T-shirt (worn for the performance), lunch, break treats, a group photo for each director (with the option for singers to purchase) and music. An additional set of music will be provided for each teacher whose students have been chosen to participate.
