Ben met his wife, Alice Reifel, while at South Dakota State College. They were married in December 1933 and had one daughter, Loyce, who later married Emery Anderson. Loyce had three daughters.

In 1972, Ben’s wife, Alice, died of pneumonia. Ben remarried on August 14, 1972, to Frances U. Colby of De Smet, S.D.
