Field Application Process

PROCEDURES IN SEED CERTIFICATION IN SOUTH DAKOTA
 

Seed Certification in South Dakota is a service maintained and supervised by the South Dakota Crop Improvement Association, Plant Science Department, South Dakota State University and the State Department of Agriculture.  The objective is to certify genetically pure seed of improved varieties of crops.

1.    Eligible Seed
 

A.   Foundation and Registered seed is eligible for recertification in South Dakota.   Special dispensation must be granted by the state that released the variety to certify the certified class when Foundation or Registered seed is no longer available for an older variety.
B.   Fields planted in SD with Foundation or Registered seed produced and certified in another state is eligible to be certified in SD; however, it must meet South Dakota's varietal purity standards.

 

2.     Selection of a field for certified seed production should be:

 

A.   Free of noxious weeds and meet isolation and previous crop requirements.
1. A field having a noxious weed problem may be approved provided adequate control measures are used to prevent weed seed formation in the crop to be Certified.
2. Crop grown the preceding year (season) must be a different kind; i.e. oats cannot follow oats, soybeans cannot follow soybeans, etc. unless the field was planted, the preceding year, with certified seed of the same variety and passed field inspection.

3. Check isolation requirements (refer to the Standards Homepage) for the crop to be Certified.

 

3.  Planting a class of Certified seed stock (Foundation or Registered)

 

A.  Thoroughly clean planting and all other equipment used to handle seed.

B.  Save a name tag from each seed lot in order to provide proof of seed source when submitting an application for field inspection.

4.  Application/Field Inspection forms will be sent to growers who have certified in recent years and are currently in the SDCIA database.  Additional Application/ Field Inspection forms are available through the County Extension Office and the State Seed Certification Office in Brookings.

A.  The Extension Agent's Office is headquarters for Seed Certification in the county.
B.  An application/ field inspection form is also referred to as Form A.  It is a three part carbonless form.  All three copies need to be sent to the Seed Certification office when the top portion has been filled out by either the grower or County Extension Educator.  One form is needed for each field.  Do not send money along with the Form A.  The growers will be invoiced directly after the field information has been entered into the SDCIA database.  These forms are then used later by the field inspector and the copies are dispersed as follows: original copy to State Seed Certification Service office, yellow copy to the grower, and the pink copy is kept by the inspector.
C.  Closing dates for filing applications are: 
  • Cool season grasses - May 15
  • Small grain, flax and warm season grasses - May 31
  • Roundup Ready Soybeans - Two weeks after planting but not later than June 15
  • Conventional Soybeans, alfalfa and all other crops - July 1
