Student Support and Engagement Opportunities

There are numerous opportunities to become engaged in activities at South Dakota State University. For students in the Civil Engineering program, the following organizations are specific to civil engineers.

Other organizations that may interest students in the Civil Engineering program are:

  • Society of Women Engineers (SWE),
    • The Society of Women Engineers is the world’s largest advocate and catalyst for change for women in engineering and technology. We help members reach their full potential as engineers and leaders through networking, professional development and the shaping of public policy. We inspire young girls and women to become engineers and support them with scholarships.
  • American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES),
    • The American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) is a national, nonprofit organization focused on substantially increasing the representation of American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders, First Nations and other indigenous peoples of North America in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) studies and careers.
  • Engineers Without Borders (EWB)
    • Improve the quality of life in disadvantaged communities through the implementation of environmentally and economically sustainable engineering projects, while developing internationally responsible engineering students.
  • Tau Beta Pi (TBP), the Engineering Honor Society
    • Tau Beta Pi is the only engineering honor society representing the entire engineering profession. It is the nation's second-oldest honor society, founded in 1885 to mark in a fitting manner those who have conferred honor upon their Alma Mater by distinguished scholarship and exemplary character as students in engineering, or by their attainments as alumni in the field of engineering, and to foster a spirit of liberal culture in engineering colleges.  There are now collegiate chapters at 245 US colleges and universities, 40 active alumni chapters in 16 districts across the country and a total initiated membership of approximately 575,000.

There are numerous scholarships available for continuing students to apply for using the university scholarship form available on MyState online at the beginning of each spring semester.
