Professionals in counseling and advocating for patients and families concerning inherited genetic disorders and diseases.

Genetic counselors support individuals and families who are looking to learn about potential familial risk of certain genetic disorders or diseases. By working with a team of healthcare providers including physicians, laboratories and patients, genetic counselors help their patients and families understand what may be coded in their genes. The pre-genetic counseling recommendations help prepare students for applying to masters’ level professional programs. Careers may also expand beyond the traditional genetic counseling role into research, education, industry and others.
