The image features a farmer holding a young sheep.

What better way to celebrate National Sheep & Goat Month than with a throwback Thursday photo of a lamb and an Eminent Farmer? Taken Feb. 2, 1948, J.F. McLoughlin, of Alexandria holds a young lamb. McLoughlin earned the title of 1948 Eminent Farmer. The Eminent Farmer, Rancher and Homemaker award began in 1927 through South Dakota State College (the predecessor of SDSU) and honors people whose leadership affected their community, South Dakota and the nation. In the citation of his award, it was said he had “an uncompromising philosophy that ‘the best is none too good.’” By the look of this lamb under McLoughlin’s care, we would have to agree.
