Joseph Hutton’s depth of knowledge of soil science and contemporary farming practices allowed him to foresee the destruction of the soil more than 20 years before the Dustbowl happened. He strongly believed that soil was the source of all life and warned of its misuse.

This odd-looking tractor is a Lion tractor, manufactured by the Lion Tractor Company, Minneapolis, MN. The Lion, first marketed in 1914, was a tricycle wheel arrangement with two large front wheels and one small rear wheel. All its weight was directly over the drive wheel. The driver sat high up on a seat above the rear wheel. The Lion sold for $566 and later for $795.

As grain is unloaded at the Sexauer Elevator, Brookings, an elevator employee takes a sample of the incoming shipment of grain to test it for moisture and quality. To know exactly how much grain is being sold, trucks are weighed upon arriving at the elevator and again after they are emptied.

April showers bring May flowers. Spring and summer bring us beautiful flowers and gardens to refresh us after months of cold and dreary weather. Congratulations Class of 2022! You made it through years of study and just like this early 20th century class, it is time to start the next new and exciting adventures of your lives. This photograph shows the South Dakota State College of Agriculture & Mechanic Arts graduating class of 1916. It was taken June 7, 1916, on the roof of the Administration Building. In the background you can see the residential district between 9th Street and 10th Street (Harvey Dunn). This location today has the Alumni Association, The SDSU Foundation Building, and the new President’s House. Also, if you look closely, you will see telephone and electric poles indicating Brookings was quite a modern city!

This photograph from the Pennington County Extension Homemakers scrapbook caption reads:

Eager for Christmas suggestions, a large group of Extension Club representatives flocked to the Home Service Dept. of the Black Hills Power and Light Co. for a demonstration arranged by the county Extension service. Showing the prettily packaged candy for the holidays is “Nancy Haven” (Dorothy Carlson) of Minneapolis, Minn., regional home economist for Western Beet Sugar Producers, Inc.

The women had the opportunity to sample the candies during the demonstration. Extension club members tasted, compared and “took home tidbits for the small fry.”
