4-H in South Dakota (02/29/24)

This week’s throwback Thursday demonstrates 4-H in South Dakota in a very literal way! From the Bon Homme County Extension Office, the 1959 photo shows young people from various clubs sitting on the grass at South Dakota State College (predecessor of SDSU). On the back, it is noted that it was State 4-H Club week. The beginnings of South Dakota 4-H originated in 1906 or 1907, as various boys’ and girls’ clubs. In 1914, the Smith-Lever Act established and funded what we know today as the Extension Service to disseminate information about agriculture and homemaking in rural areas. This act helped to fund the youth clubs that had been started the year before. For 117 years and counting, 4-H has literally worked in South Dakota!
