The South Dakota State University School of Performing Arts presents David Reynolds and Friends in a chamber music faculty recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, in the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center’s Founders Recital Hall.

The program features music for small groups of instrumentalists. A highlight of the program is an adaptation of Sergei Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf,” a time-honored masterpiece that Prokofiev himself described as “a symphonic fairy tale for children.”

“I chose a Sunday afternoon for this performance thinking there may be families with children who might want to attend but could not if we performed on a weeknight,” said Reynolds, director of the School of Performing Arts and professor of high brass and orchestra.

Performing with Reynolds will be several SDSU music faculty as well as nonresident musicians Mark Nelson and John Tomkins from the South Dakota Symphony and Washington, D.C.-based trombonist Scott Shelsta.

Nonresident musicians appear through support provided by the Patricia Pierce Visiting Artist in Residence program.

Additional repertoire on the program includes Igor Stravinsky’s masterwork, “Octet for Wind Instruments,” and the South Dakota premiere of Kevin McKee’s “Fantango” for trumpet, horn and piano.

The recital is free, and the public is invited to attend. For more information, contact the SDSU School of Performing Arts at 605-688-5187.
