“Round and ‘round we go…”

Not to be confused with a “spinning” office chair, this wooden chair is specifically designed to assist the spinner in creating yarn from fiber. The chair is narrow at the back and wider at the front, so that the person spinning can adjust their legs to a comfortable position to run the treadle of the spinning wheel. The treadle is the foot operated pedal that spins the wheel. The spinning chair also assists the posture of the person spinning.

While when the spinning wheel itself came into existence is debatable, the practice of spinning fibers into useable yarn dates back thousands of years. Before the spinning wheel, people employed a stick system, called a spindle. Both methods still exist today.
