Stone boats are sturdy wooden sledges (or sleds) often made with metal strapping binding the boards. They were used primarily for moving large stones from fields or other heavy loads such as hay bales or loads of firewood across soft ground or snow. The stone boat was pulled by a team of oxen or horses. Sometimes a stone boat had low profile runners like a sled. This stone boat is constructed of wood boards and heavy metal strapping and was used at the Brookings Country Club and residential development in Brookings until 2014.
