South Dakota State University has been, from the beginning, a national leader in dairy science. In 1896, the Dakota Agricultural College, now South Dakota State University, acquired its first herd of twenty-five dairy cows and twelve years later (1907), the Dairy Science Department is officially formed.

This milk bottle is from the College Creamery. The front screen printed label has a blue Campanile over an orange background. Flanking the Campanile is “College Creamery”. The back label lists what is available at the creamery—Cream, Buttermilk, Chocolate Drink, Cottage Cheese, Butter and Eggs. To buy dairy items, customers visited the creamery which was located west of The Barn/Gymnasium (1900-1962). In 1962, SDSU built the new Alfred Dairy Science and Microbiology Building. In 2010, funding was available for renovations to the building and the Dairy Bar was relocated and updated. Today, you can visit the Dairy Bar and enjoy a dish of SDSU’s delicious ice cream.
