South Dakota State University will reach the milestone of 100,000 graduates as the university hosts its 137th commencement May 6 at the Swiftel Center in Brookings. Moving graduation ceremonies from campus for the first time ever for the Class of 2023 is due to the construction in Frost Arena as that facility continues its transformation into First Bank & Trust Arena during the next 18 months.

Brandon Varilek, assistant professor in South Dakota State University’s College of Nursing, has received a grant to study palliative care use, kidney transplant rates, and explore survival statistics among American Indians with end-stage renal disease caused by diabetes.

Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Prize in Education Winners Announced
The 2022 winners of the prestigious Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Prize in Education were announced today by the McGraw Family Foundation and the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education. Cheryl Logan, Barry Dunn and Roy Pea — three leaders in the field doing groundbreaking work in pre-K–12 classrooms, on university campuses and in learning science research, respectively — are being recognized for their extraordinary achievements. Each winner will receive an award of $50,000 and an iconic awards sculpture.

South Dakota State University has been named one of 2022’s best colleges for nursing by the website Scrubsandbeyond. SDSU was ranked No. 15, climbing 24 spots from its ranking in 2021.
