Ableism as a sociocultural norm can pose barriers to students in higher education. Students with invisible disabilities, defined as mental or physical impairments that are not readily discernible, struggle with receiving proper aid or support in higher education classrooms. In this panel discussion, Stony Brook faculty and staff engage in a conversation about the challenges faced by students with (invisible) disabilities. Through the identification of the barriers and challenges, we aim to explore inclusive teaching practices, accessibility services, and the impact of sociocultural factors that might hinder students’ academic performance in higher education.
