During times when farm prices were down, American farm women stepped up to the plate to fill in the income gaps. They sold any excess cream, butter, and eggs to supplement their farm’s income. Many times, these commodities paid the mortgage. Even during good economic times women continued to sell their cream, butter and eggs to build their savings. To draw patrons to the business E.E. Haugen, advertised on this stoneware butter crock that “E.E. Haugen Pays the Highest Market Prices for Butter & Eggs Brookings, S.D."  Between 1898 and 1920, E. E. (Engbret E.) Haugen ran the Cash Store, a grocery and general store located in the 400 block of Main Ave. E. E. Haugen moved from Minnesota to South Dakota in 1887. He married Andrina Harrison on 15 June 1897 in Hennepin County, Minnesota. They had five children, Edwin, who died in infancy, Edmund, Berdick, Orpha and Eva. Today, Ray’s Corner occupies the address where Haugen’s business was located.
