Separating cows from calves is called weaning. Even though weaning is a stressful event, it helps the calf mature and gets them ready for a grain-based diet while allowing the cow to rest and regain energy for the new calf she may already be carrying. Calves will naturally wean themselves at approximately ten months, but farmers and ranchers will use different strategies for weaning. This device is one used for weaning. As vicious as it looks it is a relatively low stress means of weaning. The device attaches to the calf’s nostrils (ball ends) preventing the calf from reaching the teats but allows the cow and calf to stay together. The spikes will pick the cow and she will move away. The weaning device does not interfere with the calf grazing or drinking. Today, anti-suckling devices are made of plastic and are available from farm supply companies.
