A remarkable experience / Exploring USS Dwight D. Eisenhower — an engineering marvel

June 28 and 29, 2026 — the days I will never forget. I got a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69), affectionately known as "Mighty IKE,” a living engineering marvel and a remarkable testament to American engineering innovation and ingenuity.
A short ride in a CMV-22 Osprey, another symbol of engineering excellence, which can seamlessly transition between a helicopter for vertical takeoff and a turboprop airplane to fly at the speed needed to cover the distance, was a bonus.
Landing on the IKE, moving at approximately 16 knots (18.4 mph), and stepping onto one of the world's most capable aircraft carriers gave me goosebumps. It provided an unforgettable perspective on the scale, complexity and excellence of modern engineering.
It was fascinating and inspiring to see how one of the most sophisticated engineering systems ever built functions seamlessly. It reinforced the value of systems thinking, interdisciplinary teamwork and innovation — qualities that are essential in preparing the next generation of engineers. The level of systems integration and operational coordination highlighted the importance of collaboration among professionals from a variety of disciplines.
While I came away with a deeper appreciation for the extraordinary engineering that makes such a vessel possible, I left with an even greater respect for the sailors and everyone who serves and works aboard the ship.
Spending a night on IKE provided a rare opportunity to observe the life of sailors up close. Witnessing firsthand the complexity of their responsibilities, teamwork, professionalism and dedication gave me a profound appreciation for their commitment to serving our nation.
Experiences like this provide valuable perspective that extends beyond the classroom. They offer opportunities to connect academic concepts with real engineering applications while demonstrating the significant role engineers play in supporting national security, technological advancement and global operations.
I am grateful to retired Rear Adm. Bret Batchelder, an SDSU alum; Lt. Cmdr. Lauren Sucher, U.S. Navy; and Don Linn, development director at the SDSU Foundation, for arranging this visit.
Words are not enough to thank the Mighty IKE’s team, especially Lt. j.g. Ali Stewart and Ensign Blake “Tony” D’Aloia, who generously shared their time and expertise and provided such an informative and engaging experience. It was truly an honor meeting Capts. Marchesi and Faraco. Team IKE’s commitment to excellence, innovation and service is inspiring.
As I reflect on this remarkable experience, I look forward to sharing these insights with students, colleagues and everyone I talk to. It reinforced that engineering is all about integrating complex systems, solving challenging problems and empowering people to accomplish extraordinary things.
This unforgettable experience will continue to inspire me and deepen my appreciation for engineering and respect for the sailors. I sincerely appreciate everything these men and women do to protect our nation and keep us safe. Their unwavering dedication, long hours and willingness to serve in challenging conditions are truly inspiring.
I salute every one of them for their service, courage and selfless commitment to our country.
