… EROS & SDSU — 50 years of collaboration SDSU formed its Remote Sensing Institute in 1969, EROS Data Center near Baltic opened in August 1973, and a year later EROS began a cooperative education program agreement with SDSU to place students in work assignments paired with classroom studies. In the past … that began with Dennis Helder, Mary O’Neill and June Thormosgard has continued through today’s group of collaborators, which is led at SDSU by Larry Leigh, director of the SDSU Image Processing Lab. Leigh began working at the lab in fall 1999 as he finished his master’s degree and became the director with Helder’s retirement in June 2019. “The strong … can be found at EROS in the Cal/Val group, where the number of students from SDSU represents a significant portion of the group, but you will also find them at NASA and numerous commercial programs around the USA. “I believe the reason our students are sought after is due to our strong partnership with USGS EROS and the fact students actually ‘play with’ real …
… Geometric Calibration The SDSU IP Lab provides rudimentary geometric accuracy verification for sensor systems using our set of ground control points (GCPs) located in and around Brookings, SD. For this type of calibration work, the customer provides us with imagery centered on Brookings, SD, using his or her sensor. Our staff measures how close the corresponding geolocated pixel in the image is to our calibrated GCPs. We record these data … directions for Ground Control Points (GCPs) at the Brookings, SD site recorded by this sensor. It can be seen that there is a systematic error of approximately 5 meters in the easting component. However, the red circle denotes the specification for the sensor in terms of CE90 which specifies that 90% of the GCPs must lie within that circle. Hence, the customer can …

… SDSU imaging engineers testing prototype calibration device Imaging engineers at South Dakota State University are testing a prototype device that may soon be used to calibrate sensors on Earth-imaging satellites, according to Larry Leigh, director of the SDSU Image Processing Laboratory. The partnership with Labsphere, a New Hampshire-based electro-optics company, will also help Leigh and his team conduct research to validate new remote sensing products. SDSU Image Processing Lab Director Larry Leigh and research associate Pedro … to know how well the sensors and algorithms are doing that,” said Leigh, noting lab clients, such the U.S. Geological Survey, are interested in utilizing this capability. “That will open new potential avenues for calibration and validation of another level of products that the industry wants.” About Labsphere Labsphere, Inc. is headquartered in New Hampshire, US, …
… Radiometric Calibration Radiometric Calibration refers to the ability to convert the digital numbers recorded by satellite imaging systems into physical units. Those units are either radiance (W/m2/sr/µm) or apparent top-of-atmosphere reflectance. Vicarious-based Absolute This type of calibration is performed … be used as a reference radiometer. Currently, we use the MODIS satellite sensors as our calibrated radiometer. This sensor monitors the upwelling radiance of the PICS locations. By comparing customer’s sensor’s measurement to this reference value, calibration correction coefficients can be generated for the customer. An example of the output data produced from …
