Plants, people and progress for native prairie seeds
Across much of the central United States, there are ongoing efforts to restore native prairie. Returning native plants to the landscape can improve soil health, water quality and provide habitat for important wildlife and pollinators. Decades of research undertaken by South Dakota State University Distinguished Professor Kasiviswanathan “Muthu” Muthukumarappan earned him lifetime achievement awards from two professional organizations this summer. Muthu was honored by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) as a fellow at its meeting in Chicago July 11, and on July 14 he was in Indianapolis to be honored by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers at its international meeting.

New event to connect families, runners with where their food comes from
The South Dakota State University College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences invites all community members to participate in a new event with the goal of connecting the Brookings area with where their food comes from. Farm to Finish Line and Breakfast on the Farm is a two-part event that will involve a 3.9-mile cross-country style run/walk and an all-welcome breakfast and interactive activities fair on Saturday, Sept. 26.
