Program Dismissal

MLS Student Dismissal

Students are expected to comply with the SDSU Student Code of Conduct (3:1), which appears in the Student Policies Manual and is the basic guideline reflecting university-student relations. The code defines student behavior, expectations and related university conduct and judicial procedures.

In addition all MLS students are expected to comply with professional behavior, expectations and requirements specifically set forth as essential within the MLS program. The student will be notified in a conference with a program official, typically the program director that a recommendation for dismissal is being filed. In the event the director is unavailable a SDSU MLS faculty member will be assigned to the conference by the program director. A student will be dismissed from the professional program for any of the following reasons.

Academic Dismissal

Following Probation according to the policies and procedures previously described.

  1. A student who fails to achieve acceptable academic performance in any component listed within the grading requirements of the program.
  2. Any student who is not satisfactorily removed from probation as approved by program officials.
  3. Dishonesty on any examination, assignment, practical or quiz, falsifying laboratory results or reports or failure to meet acceptable professional behavior requirements. Such actions will be grounds for dismissal from the program. The consequences of academic dishonesty ranges from disciplinary probation to expulsion. The full policies are found in Chapter 1 of the Student Code (01:10:25:01-1:10:25:04) within the SDSU Student Policy Manual.

Non-Academic Dismissal

  1. Failure to comply with SDSU - MLS Program Requirements, affiliated hospital/clinic requirements, or laboratory regulations or policies will be grounds for immediate dismissal from the program. Dismissal from the MLS program may not include suspension or dismissal from the University. SDSU dismissal is based on the SDSU student code as described previously under MLS dismissal.
  2. Refusal to be rehabilitated after proven evidence of intoxication or drug use while functioning as a student in the laboratory.
  3. Failure to comply with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) regulations.

Appeal

A student has the right to appeal the dismissal action by the approved grievance procedures established by South Dakota State University. The Petition and Appeal Process can be found in the SDSU online catalog.
