About the Miller Wellness Center

History

The Miller Wellness Center's mission statement, "Enriching the quality of life is our passion!"

Over 40 years, the Miller Wellness Center has had the same passion to provide quality services and programs to our students, faculty, staff and Brookings area community. The Brookings Wellness Program began in conjunction with the Brookings Hospital in 1980, which is now the Miller Wellness Center. We strive to be a holistic facility by focusing on seven dimensions of wellness through the student health clinic, counseling center, Jackrabbit Pharmacy, nutrition services, intramurals, group fitness, aquatics, sport clubs, outdoor programs and HEROH, our peer education group. SDSU is one of the first facilities in the country to house a Student Health Clinic and recreation opportunities under one roof.

Vision Statement

To be a national leader in creating a synergistic wellness environment that enhances personal growth and well-being.

Goals

  • Provide comprehensive wellness programs and services that optimize student success.
  • Provide services and programs that support diversity, equity, inclusion and multiculturalism.
  • Provide students with co-curricular learning experience that enhance their development in leadership, civic engagement, community service and critical thinking.
  • Enhance learning in and outside the classroom by providing quality programs, services and facilities that foster creativity and innovation.
  • Provide financial resources to support the Wellness Center's mission and strategic plan.
  • Enhance engagement within the university and city by building healthy and supportive communities.

Diversity and Inclusion

The Miller Wellness Center recognizes and celebrates the opportunities wellness provides by uniting individuals from distinct backgrounds in a common goal. We strive to provide inclusive spaces and programs for all students and members regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, socio-economic status, creed, ability, gender expression, age or sexual orientation, and foster an inclusive environment that enables all to succeed.

National Involvement, Leadership and Research

The Miller Wellness Center participates in the national association for recreational sports professionals, NIRSA and the national association for student health and wellness, the American College Health Association (ACHA).

NIRSA is the leading resource for professional and student development, education, and research in collegiate recreational sports. NIRSA's state networks give members opportunities to collaborate and network with their NIRSA neighbors, discuss the local and state concerns most important to their unique institutions and take advantage of nearby educational and professional opportunities.

Through advocacy, research and education, ACHA stands at the forefront of issues that impact the health and wellness of our college students. ACHA serves as the principal leadership organization for advancing the health of college students and campus communities through advocacy, education and research.
