Affiliated Organizations

The Veterinary & Biomedical Sciences Department is an institutional member of the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC). The AAVMC represents and promotes the professional interests of institutions involved with veterinary medical education. This includes Colleges of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Science Departments, and Comparative Medicine Departments within the USA.

The South Dakota Veterinary Medical Association (SDVMA) and the SDSU Veterinary & Biomedical Sciences Department (VBSD) have a long history of collaboration and interaction to advance the discipline of Veterinary Medicine in South Dakota and to improve the health of animals and people. The SDVMA and VBSD work jointly together to meet the continuing education needs of the profession in the region via a variety of annual educational events.

The only animal health laboratory in South Dakota is operated by the SDSU Veterinary & Biomedical Sciences Department, the SD Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (ADRDL). The laboratory employees approximately 65 faculty and staff, and serves all species. The ADRDL is fully accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians. It is advised by a 15 member committee representing all animal stakeholder industries.

The ADRDL is accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD). The AAVLD accredits under a stringent standard compliant with the international expectation’s of our trading partners as put forth by the World Health Organization (OIE).

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), established in 1863, is a not-for-profit association representing more than 82,500 veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia, and uniformed services. Structured to work for its members, the AVMA acts as a collective voice for its membership and for the profession.

The VBSD and the ADRDL work closely with the South Dakota State Veterinarian and the South Dakota Animal Industry Board (SD AIB). The ADRDL is the official test laboratory of the SD AIB.

The SDSU ADRDL is a member laboratory of the USDA National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN). The NAHLN is a state and federal partnership to safeguard animal health.

The SDSU ADRDL is a member laboratory of the USDA/FDA Food Emergency Response Network (FERN). The FERN integrates the nation's food-testing laboratories at the local, state, and federal levels into a network that is able to respond to emergencies involving biological, chemical or radiological contamination of food.

The SDSU ADRDL is a member laboratory of the FDA Veterinary Laboratory Response Network (VLRN). The mission of the VLRN is to promote human and animal health by collaborating with veterinary diagnostic laboratories.
