Accelerated Nursing Application Checklist - Sioux Falls

The following must be completed to be considered for the Accelerated Option Professional Nursing Major in Sioux Falls.

  •  I have submitted an application to the university.
    • Prior to applying to the Professional Nursing Major, students must apply for admission to SDSU.  The university application can be completed online through the Admissions Office website: Undergraduate Admissions Application.
    • Students graduating with an undergraduate degree from SDSU this academic year will need to complete a new application.
    • Official transcripts showing a conferred BA/BS degree, pre-requisite course (both completed and in-progress) are necessary for admissions. These transcripts must be submitted directly to SDSU Admissions Office. If you will have courses in-progress at the application deadline, you must send updated official transcripts to SDSU upon completion of coursework. Coursework completed at South Dakota State University, Dakota State University, University of South Dakota, Northern State University, School of Mines, or Black Hills State University does not need to be submitted to SDSU Admissions.
  • I have completed the application for admission to the Professional Nursing Major.
    • The application and application materials for the Professional Nursing Major must be completed online through the NursingCAS website. You are encouraged to submit the application at least one week prior to the application deadline.
    • Application materials will include unofficial or official transcripts, two personal essays, and two professional references, all of which are uploaded to or completed in NursingCAS.
    • The application and materials submission priority deadline for Sioux Falls admission is March 1.
  • I have read and understand the Professional Nursing Major admission requirements.
    • Eligible students may apply to the Professional Nursing Major when pre-requisite courses are completed or in progress (see course listing below).  Further eligibility requirements can be obtained online or from the Accelerated Option advisor.
  • I have read and understand the technical standards.
    • Students preparing for education in the field of professional nursing must demonstrate a stable personality and the ability to meet the demands of the professional nurse role.  For admission to, progression in, and completion of the undergraduate program in nursing, the student must meet Technical Standards for the Professional nursing.
  • I have completed the required personal essays.
    • Two personal essays are required as part of the NursingCAS application.
  • Non-native speakers of English: I have submitted my TOEFL or IELTS score report with my NursingCAS application.
    • The College of Nursing requires all students who meet the definition of English as a Second Language to complete the TOEFL or the IELTS exam, regardless of residency status. English as a Second Language is defined as a student who was instructed and spoke primarily in a language other than English in the K-12 grade.
    • The minimum TOEFL score required for admission to the Professional Nursing Major is 84 (iBT), with a minimum speaking score of 26. The required IELTS band score for admission to the Professional Nursing Major is 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in each module. These scores are required before the student will be accepted into the Professional Nursing Major.
  • Students who answered “yes” to legal question(s): I have attached/submitted the required documentation.
    • Students who answered “yes” to any of the legal questions on the Legal Compliance Questions must submit copies of charges or citations and ALL communications with (to and from) the citing agency AND the court of jurisdiction, including evidence of completion/compliance with court requirements.
    • These documents must be uploaded into the “Documents” section of the NursingCAS application.
  • Pre-Requisite Courses: The following courses (both pre-nursing and general education) must be completed or in progress at the time of application to the Professional Nursing Major: Please note that 5 of the 9 pre-nursing courses must be COMPLETED at the time of application in January and students may only have eight credits left to complete during the fall semester prior to the start of the program. All courses must be completed and transcripts submitted prior to the start of the program in August.

      • PSYC 101 General Psychology, 3 credits
      • SOC 100 Introduction to Sociology or 150 Social Problems or 240 Sociology of Rural America, 3 credits
      • PSYC 221 Lifespan Developmental Psychology or HDFS 210 Lifespan Development, 3 credits
      • CHEM 106/106L Chemistry Survey & lab (or CHEM 112/112L Gen Chem I & lab), 4 credits
      • CHEM 108/108L Organic & Biochemistry & lab (or CHEM 114/114L Gen Chem II & lab) , 4-5 credits
      • NUTR 315 Human Nutrition, 3 credits
      • BIOL 221/221L Anatomy & lab, 4 credits
      • BIOL 325/325L Physiology & lab, 4 credits
      • MICR 231/L Microbiology & lab, 4 credits
    • General education courses
      • NURS 119 Seminar course or similar transfer course, 2 credits
      • ENGL 101 Composition I, 3 credits
      • ENGL 201 Composition II, 3 credits
      • MATH 102 College Algebra or higher, 3 credits
      • SPCM 101 Fundamentals of Speech (or 215 Public Speaking or 222 Argumentation & Debate), 3 credits
      • Humanities or Fine Arts, two courses equaling 6 credits

CLEP/AP credits may be accepted for some of the requirements above.
Previous “D” and/or “F” grades can disqualify a student from applying to the nursing program. Please refer to eligibility requirements for further clarification of this policy.
