Placement in English and reading courses is based on ACT or SAT test scores earned in the past five years.  Entering students who have scores older than five years, or who have not taken the ACT or SAT  tests are placed in classes by use of the College Board ACCUPLACER.  Initial placement into math courses will be based on a student's Math Index.

Transfer students who have not completed college-level math or English courses will be placed into the appropriate level SDSU math or English courses using either current (within five years) ACT scores, Math Index, or College Board ACCUPLACER scores.

Distance Education Students requiring Math 121 or below refer to ACCUPLACER Remote Testing.  Students who need placement into Math 123 refer to Calculus Placement Information.

Math 123 - Calculus I placement is only by the SDCAL ACCUPLACER exam

ACCUPLACER Registration at SDSU

Dual Credit Enrollment

Students attempting to place into High School Dual Credit courses offered through the South Dakota Regental System can take the placement exam at the Testing Center.  There is an $18 challenge fee to take the exam. HSDC students may take the ACCUPLACER once per semester.

Challenging Placement

Students are allowed to to take the ACCUPLACER twice.  If challenging ones placement, there is a $18.00 challenge fee that must be paid prior to testing.

Students may challenge for the following reasons:

  1. To challenge ACT, SAT, or Math Index placement.
  2. Students who have taken a placement test because of old, invalid, or no ACT or SAT scores may challenge their placement by taking a placement examination a second time.

Students who are not enrolled in the appropriate courses based on ACT, SAT, Math Index, or ACCUPLACER scores will be notified by e-mail through the Math and English Departments.  Failure to adjust courses or take a placement test prior to the add/drop date for the semester will result in the student being administratively dropped from math and/or English courses.

Where to take a Placement Test

The Testing Center at SDSU offers ACCUPLACER testing all year long.  The office is open Monday –Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, testing begins at 8:30 am.  You may take the ACCUPLACER any time prior to the add/drop date of the semester you wish to enroll in.  If you are not able to test at the SDSU Testing Center, you may test at any of the ACCUPLACER Testing Sites listed below.

Students residing out of South Dakota may test at an ACCUPLACER test site in their state.  In this situation, the Testing Center at South Dakota State University will issue the student a voucher that can be used to test using South Dakota Board of Regents approved ACCUPLACER branching packages. There may be an additional cost to test at testing site not affiliated with the South Dakota Board of Regents.

If you are absolutely unable to test at any of the listed ACCUPLACER test sites, you may test remotely with a virtual proctor.  There is an additional cost for this service and a computer with internet access and a webcam is required.  Please contact the Testing Center at 605-688-6460 or to make an appointment for testing, or with any questions or concerns.

About Placement Tests

Placement tests are computer-based adaptive assessment programs using modules that allow students to work at their own speed and comfort level.  A tutorial program acquaints students with navigation and response patterns.  The placement test does not have a time limit, the scores do not affect admission to SDSU, and there is no pass or fail score.  Most students take about 30 minutes per section; the questions vary based on responses to previous questions.
