Classroom Troubleshooting

Having some class issues right before your class begins and your class is after the Support Desk closes? Here are a couple of basic troubleshooting steps to get you back on track.

 

Extron Panel Buttons Not Working

When the projector is off, hold down the on and off buttons. While doing this, press the 1,3,4,6 buttons on the control panel.

  • Do this when any button pressed results in just flashing lights, especially if the projector won’t power on.
  • If the touch panel is black, touch the panel or press the button on the bottom to wake it up.
  • If the touch panel is not responding, hold the button on the panel's bottom until it says it will reboot. It will take 2 to 3 minutes for the panel to restart. If it’s still not working, call Classroom Tech.
  • In newer rooms, if the projectors are off, find the main power plug. Unplug it, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. This will reboot the whole system. Otherwise, call CTS at 4587.
Projector Troubleshooting
  1. Press and hold both Project On/Off buttons light green, the other buttons dim, and the bottom Volume LED blinks.
  2. While still pressing the Projector buttons, enter the PIN. Use the input selection buttons as a 6-key numeric keypad; press one button at a time.
    1. The correct pin is entered, the green Volume LEDs flash, and all buttons flash green 3 times, indicating that the front panel is locked, then return to the way they were lit before the front panel lockout was set.
    2. If an incorrect PIN is entered, no buttons flash, the green Volume LEDs turn off, and the red (top) LED blinks. Then he buttons light as they were lit before the front panel lockout was set.
Video Problems

Nothing on-screen – change inputs to the document camera, is there anything on the screen?

If there is, switch back to PC. If still nothing, make sure the display is set to duplicate.

Color bars on-screen – change inputs to the document camera, is there anything on the screen?

If there is, switch back to PC. If still nothing, make sure the display is set to duplicate.

If these don’t resolve the problem, call CTS at 4587.

Audio Problems

First – Make sure the volume on the PC or YouTube is turned up. Make sure the volume is not muted on the classroom control panel.

Check that “A/V Mute” or “Audio Mute” is not flashing or red. If it is, press it to turn it off. Is there sound now?

If it isn’t, hit A/V Mute, the screen should go black, then hit A/V Mute again. Is there sound now?

In a dual projector classroom, make sure the source they want sound from is the last one pressed.

Second – open sound under the PC control panel. There should be at least one output device (possibly labeled “Default Audio”) for an HDMI output. If there is no HDMI output and no sound from the speakers, call CTS to fix it.

If neither of these resolves the problem, call CTS at 4587.

DDN

Classroom Information
SDSU has four classrooms dedicated to videoconferencing.  They are located on the second floor of the Pugsley Continuing Education Center (SPC). 

SPC 203 (DDN) – 22 seats

SPC 205 (DDN) – 22 seats

SPC 210 (DDN) – 12 seats

SPC 214 (DDN) – 64 seats

Hours of Operation
The DDN classrooms are available Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Requests for usage outside of the standard operating hours will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

Scheduling

Meetings/Conferences – To schedule a meeting/conference utilizing the DDN technology, please fill out the videoconference request form on InsideState: https://appsrvsp.sdstate.edu/video_conference_request/default.aspx.

 

Classes
For classes that will utilize the DDN to connect with remote sites, departments will submit DDN courses to the Records and Registration office as they do typical classes.  Please ensure the appropriate CAP is provided according to the seats available per classroom when submitting to Records and Registration.  Departments are also responsible for ensuring the appropriate CAPS are in place for courses we receive from other universities. Kim Hyland, Continuing Education, and Outreach coordinate the semester courses with the state and remote sites.  If you have questions or changes regarding the class schedule, contact Kim at Kimberly.Hyland@sdstate.edu or 688-4154.  Note:  if a scheduled DDN class does not have any students at any remote sites, departments will be asked to re-locate the course to a different classroom to improve videoconference room availability.

 

Cancellations
If canceling a scheduled class session or meeting/conference, please send a notification to ddn@sdstate.edu or call 688-6111 as soon as possible so rooms can be made available for other videoconference usage and technical support staffing can be adjusted.

Off-Campus DDN Sites

Off-Network / Out-of-State Connections
It is generally possible to schedule videoconference connections with entities other than those identified in the Off-Campus DDN Sites list.   When making a scheduling request for connections to sites “outside” of the DDN network, please include technical support contact information from the remote site(s) in the request.  At the minimum, please give a 5 business day notice when scheduling an off-network or out-of-state meeting/conference; the earlier the request, the better chances of accommodation.

Recording
All DDN courses that originate from SDSU are recorded. The ownership of these video files is transferred to the instructor. Instructors may embed them in D2L as they see fit. For meetings/conferences, recordings are available upon request before the conference. There is an option on the videoconference request form to select recording. Ownership of these video files is transferred to the person specified in the ‘File Owner’ box on the form.

Remote participant instructions:
You will need a webcam and a microphone connected to a computer/laptop with a reliable internet connection. The connection code for the conference is only valid during the scheduled conference time.

There are 2 ways the participants can connect to SDSU employees.

The first and easiest is Skype for Business (SfB) / Surface Hub:

Locate the "Find someone" search box near the top of the SfB application.

Enter the Virtual Meeting Room (VMR) address: (Conference ID#)@ddn.sd.gov

Double-click on the VMR ((Conference ID#)@ddn.sd.gov) in the search list.

Click the Camera icon at the bottom of the messenger window that opened.

Preview your camera and click "Start My Video."

 

Technical Support
SDSU videoconferencing is supported by the Classroom Technology Services (CTS) department of the Division of Technology and Security.  All scheduled classes and meetings/conferences have a technician assigned to monitor and assist in technical issues.  If help is needed, visit the support staff in Pugsley Center 205A, 205B, or 212, or call 688-6111.
