What one thing unites campus, community, and over 100 years of Jackrabbits? Say it loud: Hobo Day! The 2021 Hobo Day Committee invites you to help us celebrate our homecoming tradition on October 23. 

Adventure Awaits

Hobo Week 2021 begins Monday, October 18, building excitement leading up to Hobo Day, on Saturday, October 23. Check out our schedule below to celebrate campus traditions and create new ones for years to come.

Thursday, October 14 – Hobo Gear Prep Night

Market | 5 p.m. – Looking to add to your Hobo garb collection? Find the perfect outfits through a selection offered by local Brookings businesses.

Monday, October 18 – Bum-A-Meal

Volstorff Ballroom | 5 p.m. – Students can sign up to "bum a meal" from a generous host home in Brookings, then wander out into the town to enjoy this truly unique Hobo Week experience.

Tuesday, October 19 – Bum Fire

Backyard (North of Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex) | 9 p.m. – Keep warm by the fire with your fellow friends, following UPC's Jacks Got Talent.

Wednesday, October 20 – Bum Over

Volstorff Ballroom | 7:30 p.m. – Build your own hobo shanties from cardboard and share Hobo spirit! Bring your own supplies to make your creation unique.

Thursday, October 21 – Service Event

Sylvan Green | 5:30 p.m. – Details on this to come.

Friday, October 22 – Rally at the Rails

Downtown Brookings | 5 p.m. – Games, food trucks, vendors and more will be at the rally. See performances from the Pride of the Dakotas Marching Band, the Bum Band and SDSU Spirit Squads.

Saturday, October 23 – Hobo Day

Medary Avenue - Downtown Brookings | 9:30 a.m. – View the Hobo Day parade along its designated route. See creative floats made by student organizations and Brookings locals. Catch performances from the Pride of the Dakotas Marching band and several other local high school bands. This is a parade, you don't want to miss!

Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium | 2 p.m. – Football – South Dakota State University Jackrabbits vs. University of Northern Iowa Panthers

Volstorff Ballroom | 7 p.m. – Hobo Night Live – Play games, win prizes, attend a comedy show (8:30 p.m. start time) and more.

2021 Hobo Day Committee announced

The Hobo Day Committee has announced its 2021 committee. The Hobo Day Committee is a student-led organization comprised of 18 South Dakota State University students and led by the Grand Pooba. Marie Robbins, from Elkton, is serving as the 2021 Grand Pooba.

Marie Robbins Selected to Lead South Dakota State University’s 2021 Hobo Day Celebration

Marie Robbins, a junior majoring in agricultural business and agricultural education, communications and leadership from Elkton, was recently selected to lead Hobo Day, the biggest one-day event in the Dakotas, as the 2021 Grand Pooba.
