Hubert Mathieu (1897-1954) studied under Harvey Dunn’s first art instructor Ada Caldwell in Brookings and in 1918, moved to New York City to study under Dunn himself. Mathieu went on to a successful career in illustration, most notably as an illustrator for "McCall’s" magazine. In 1954 a booklet was published promoting what would become the South Dakota Art Museum. Mathieu provided pen and ink drawings of SDSU landmarks, including the two featured here.
