2023 Loren Lutz Teacher of the Year Award

This award is given each year to a teacher who dedicates their teaching career to utilizing and working with the NHD program. Our 2023 Loren Lutz Teacher of the Year award winner is Jennifer Prahl from Rapid City Christian!  Jennifer’s nomination form says it best: “Jennifer has led the National History Day program at our school masterfully.  As an enthusiastic teacher of history, she sets high standards for all of her students and encourages them to do the heavy lifting of research.  Her attention to detail and foresight have helped many students create projects that show clarity and independent thinking.”  Jennifer introduced NHD to Rapid City Christian in 2015 and by this year, almost 200 entries compete at their local/school contest.  Congratulations Jennifer, and thank you for what you do for NHD in SD!

Loren Lutz Teacher of the Year Award

This award is given each year to a teacher who dedicates their teaching career to utilizing and working with the NHD program. The 2022 recipient is Sue Larson from Rapid City Christian. Sue’s nomination form says it best: “Through the years, she has encouraged students to strive for the best and has been an example as she takes courses from NHD and shares her knowledge with her students. She encourages students to read deeply about their topic, checking out books for them from the public library or purchasing them for students. She teaches students to write a thesis and revise; instructs students on how to be great researchers. Sue has encouraged and connected students to interview individuals about their topics and to contact museums and curators about accessing their collections. She embodies for students the love of learning and the willingness to "dive deep" into a topic.”

Loren Lutz Teacher of the Year Award

This award is given each year to a teacher who dedicates their teaching career to utilizing and working with the NHD program. The 2021 recipient is Andrew Stewart from Jones County School District. Andrew’s nomination form says it best: "For Andrew, history education not just a job – it’s a passion. Andrew was a student who participated in the NHD program and has carried his pride and passion for NHD throughout his college career and into his professional career as well. He also utilizes NHD and project based learning in his classroom and not just with his NHD contest participants. This award is extra special for Andrew as he had the opportunity to work with Mr. Lutz and have him as a role model during his first few years of teaching."

Loren Lutz Teacher of the Year Award

This award is given each year to a teacher who dedicates their teaching career to utilizing and working with the NHD program. The 2020 recipient is Nathan Bloom from Summit. One of Nathan’s nominators had this to say about him: "Not only has Mr. Bloom excelled at NHD within his own school, but he continually looks to spread the program of National History Day to surrounding schools. Mr. Bloom created a conference event, hosting area schools in northeast South Dakota, to not only promote the program but to provide more opportunities for his students and [the students from] surrounding schools."
