Credit for Prior Learning

Credit for Prior Learning in Sociology and Rural Studies

The Department of Sociology and Rural Studies recognizes that not all learning occurs in the classroom and strongly supports out-of-class, service, and applied learning opportunities and internships.

Some of our non-traditional returning students bring with them similar experiential learning experiences, based on the learning opportunities they took advantage of in their workplaces, communities, and civic life, as they return to the virtual or real-time classroom.  These students may apply for up to 12 SOC 294 internship credits which can be applied as elective credits toward graduation by:

  1. Setting up an initial consultation to determine if the skills, training, and knowledge you acquired can be used for prior learning credit.

  2. Those students for whom credit for prior learning appears to be a viable option must then:
     
    1. Sign up for SOC 492 Topics: Portfolio Development and complete the portfolio process.
       
      1. The instructor and one additional faculty will assess the portfolio and recommend the number of credits for which the student may apply.
         
      2. Upon competition of the course and instructors’ assessment of the portfolio, the student can contact the Testing center to fill out the application for credit for prior learning and pay the $90 (2016) fee.
         
  3. Students receiving 12 credits for SOC 294 are not eligible to take additional internship credits toward their degree.
     
  4. Types of prior learning experiences for which the portfolio process in Sociology is appropriate include:
     
    1. Military training
    2. Law enforcement training
    3. Continuing education/professional development classes
    4. Certifications
    5. Competency certification
    6. Documented on-the-job training
    7. Community service
    8. Public office
    9. Other
       
  5. The Portfolio process includes three steps:
     
    1. Documenting your personal and career history trajectory and demonstrating the importance of prior learning to past successes and future goals.
       
    2. Identification of prior learning competencies including: what was learned, how it was learned, how students used what they learned, and reflection on the learning process. (This process is very similar to what students do in an actual internship).
       
    3. Complication of evidence to support the application.
