Abstract

The Water and Environmental Engineering Research Center conducts research, education and outreach activities through principal investigators who are faculty members in the Engineering College. This collection is composed of center records, Atmospheric, Environmental, and Water Resources Ph.D. program records, research projects, and the Huron Recharge project records.

Historical Note

The Water and Environmental Engineering Research Center is located in the College of Engineering. Formerly named the Northern Great Plains Water Resources Research Center, this center conducts research, education and outreach activities through principal investigators who are faculty members in the Engineering College. Projects are funded by governmental agencies, cities and industries, and are focused on engineering solutions to water resources and environmental problems. These solutions often require collaboration with other university departments or off-campus units. The research center also maintains an environmental chemistry laboratory in Crothers Engineering Hall in conjunction with the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. The laboratory supports research projects, environmental engineering courses and outreach activities.

The mission of the Center is to enhance the habitability and economic development of the Northern Great Plains through multidisciplinary research of the region's vast water and related land resources. The center supports this mission through the conduct of engineering and related research on significant issues affecting water resources by focusing on various disciplines in higher education such as agriculture, health and social sciences, law, chemistry, and biology in partnership with engineering, to assure a critical mass of researchers working to foster multi- and interdisciplinary work on the conservation, development, management and use of water and related land resources.

Arrangement

This collection in arranged into four series:

Series 1. Water and Environmental Research Center records

Series 2. Atmospheric, Environmental, and Water Resources PhD program records

Series 3. Research Projects

Series 4. Huron Recharge Project records

Contents Note

Series 1. Water and Environmental Research Center records.

This collection is composed of a brochure from a lecture series titled Futuresigns, and a white paper describing the concept of a regional research center concentrating on the concerns of water use, protection, and availability in the Northern Great Plains region. This collection also contains documents relating to the Atmospheric, Environmental and Water Resources, a joint PhD program between South Dakota State University (SDSU) and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SDSMT). The program began in 1992 and ended in 2004. The collection also includes research papers in the field of water resources from 1992 to 2003. The reports and papers cover such topics such as bridge approaches and developments, water management, networks, and systems. In addition, the records contain files regarding the Huron Recharge Project.

Series 2. Atmospheric, Environmental, and Water Resources PhD program records.

In December 1991, the board considered a request from the School of Mines and South Dakota State University to approve a joint PhD program in Water resources. Approval was not given at first, because the request for new funds exceeded a specific amount. However, it was approved later the year. The AEWR program had been in a partnership with the AEWR program in the School of Mines and Technology. They created a joint program in Atmospheric, Environmental and Water Resources. This joint program provided PhD education and degrees in the fields of atmospheric, environmental and water resources. Due to the lack of assistantship funds and a low enrollment, the program closed in 2004.

Series 3. Research Projects.

This series includes research projects in the field of water resources. The reports and papers cover such topics such as bridge approaches and developments, water management, networks, and systems.

Series 4. Huron Recharge Project records.

This series includes materials from the Huron Recharge Project. There are several reports on water usage and project activities in Huron.
