Abstract
The Vigil in South Dakota was founded as a nonprofit organization in 1992 by Mary Perpich and Norman Gambill. The collection mainly includes the organization’s involvement with the issue of censorship of “The Portrait of a Marriage” by Educational Telecommunication and responses to the debate over censorship in South Dakota.
Historical Note
The Vigil in South Dakota was a nonprofit organization founded by Mary Perpich and Norman Gambill in 1992. The organization focused on First Amendment advocacy in South Dakota. They took special interest in the controversial debate over the censorship of South Dakota Public Broadcasting’s program “The Portrait of a Marriage.” They brought attention to other issues related to First Amendment rights like an offensive painting in the South Dakota Governor’s office. The organization dissolved in 2005.
