Abstract

Little International is a two-day agricultural exposition planned, organized, and implemented by students at South Dakota State University for the benefit of high school and college students. This collection is composed of publications produced by the Little I, including news releases, posters and programs.

Historical Note

Little International is a two-day agricultural exposition planned, organized, and implemented by students at South Dakota State University for the benefit of high school and college students. Little International is considered the largest two-day agricultural exposition in the country. The exposition provides students with an opportunity to compete in judging contests, showmanship competitions, and fitting challenges.

Little International has been presented every year since 1921 with only three exceptions. In 1926, it was canceled due to the Scarlet Fever epidemic, and 1944–1945 it was canceled because of World War II. The first Little I was patterned after the Chicago International Livestock Exposition and was held on campus in what is now the Agricultural Heritage Museum. In 1952, Little International was moved to what is now called the Intramural Building. In 1977 it was moved to where it is held today, the Animal Science Arena in. During the week prior to Little International, the student staff prepares the Arena for the exposition. This includes erecting the famous red barn and white fence, adding bleachers, and dying the wood chips green for the show ring. Also, each member of the staff is responsible for ensuring that the specific task of the committee they sit on is accomplished, whether that task is livestock judging or the event schedule.

Little International serves both high school and college students alike. The exposition provides a fun and competitive opportunity for students to develop and refine skills essential for lifelong success in agriculture. Through Little International, students can utilize the two day event, not just as an opportunity to improve their showmanship, fitting, or judging skills, but also to develop time management skills, responsibility, hard work and personal pride—not to mention the networking possibilities and the fun had by all involved with Little International.

College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences Dean's Office Records. UA 5.0

The College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences has a three-fold mission to teach, conduct research, and use extension programs to serve people in South Dakota, the nation, and the world. The collection is composed of general office records and financial records generated by the Office of the Dean for the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences.

Department of Economics Records. UA 5.1

The Department of Economics offers undergraduate academic programs in Economics (with an optional Business specialization), Agricultural Business, Agricultural and Resource Economics, and Entrepreneurial Studies. The collection consists of reports by faculty and graduate assistants for the Economics Department, the Agricultural Experiment Station, and for the Cooperative Extension Service. Also included are general office records produced by the Economics Department.

Department of Horticulture, Forestry, Landscape, and Parks Records. UA 5.2

The Department of Horticulture, Forestry, Landscape and Parks offered instruction leading to the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree with majors in horticulture, landscape design, and park management. The collection is composed of a herbarium and plant analysis ledger and general office records produced by the Department of Horticulture, Forestry, Landscape and Parks within the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences at South Dakota State University.

South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station Records. UA 5.3

The South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station's mission is one of the cornerstones of a land grant university. In addition to enhancing the quality of life in our state, our research directly supports the teaching programs offered by the College of Agriculture & Biological Sciences, the College of Education & Human Sciences, and the educational program delivered by SDSU Extension. The collection is composed of material generated by the Agricultural Experiment Station and includes financial reports, general office records, research, seed releases, institutional reviews, and publications.

Cooperative Extension Service Records. UA 5.4

SDSU Extension's purpose is to foster a learning community environment that empowers citizens to advocate for sustainable change that will strengthen agriculture, natural resources, youth, families, and the communities of South Dakota. This collection is composed of records generated by the Cooperative Extension Service and includes general administrative materials, 4-H publications, personnel communications, news releases, and the South Dakota AgrAbility Project.

Department of Dairy Science Records UA 5.7

The Department of Dairy Science covers the entire spectrum of the dairy industry; from farm to product, with expertise in both Dairy Production and Dairy Manufacturing. This collection consists of administrative records, publications and Dairy Husbandry records which consist of correspondence, reports, registry materials, receipts, bills, inventories, statements, photographs and miscellaneous items.

Department of Sociology and Rural Studies Records. UA 5.9

The Department of Sociology and Rural Studies' mission is to strengthen and deliver high quality programs in teaching, research, service, and extension, contributing to the quality of life and sustainable development locally, the state, region, nation, and world. The collection is composed of publications generated by the Rural Sociology Department, including reports, pamphlets, and surveys.

Department of Natural Resources Management Records. UA 5.10

The Department of Natural Resource Management's mission is to conduct research, educate at all levels, and provide services and outreach that benefit South Dakotans and society as a whole. Our department addresses basic and applied research questions and approaches in: Ecology and Environmental Science, Rangeland Ecology and Management, and Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences. This collection is composed of publications generated by the Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences Department, including brochures, programs, newsletters and announcements.

Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Records. UA 5.13

The mission of Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences is to protect and improve the health of animals, the viability of the South Dakota livestock industry, and the welfare of society through high quality diagnostic, research, Extension, and teaching activities. The collection is composed of newsletters, reports, photographs, and booklets from conferences, symposiums and workshops of the Department of Veterinary & Biomedical Sciences and the South Dakota Animal Disease Research & Diagnostic Laboratory.
