Abstract

Joseph and Signe Stuart worked and taught in Brookings for several decades. Signe Stuart was a professor of art at SDSU from 1972 to 1994 and Joe Stuart served as director and curator at the South Dakota Art Museum. The collection is composed of the work history of Joseph and Signe Stuart. Materials consist of lecture notes, correspondence, retirement material, material related to Signe's Badlands intermedia performance at South Dakota State University, art exhibition material, photographs, videos, sketches, and biographical information.

Stuart, Joseph, 1932-2016

Stuart, Joseph Martin was born on November 9, 1932 in Seminole, Oklahoma, United States. Son of Arch William and Lillian (Lindsey) Stuart. Married Signe Margaret Nelson, June 18, 1960.

Joe attended high school in Albuquerque, New Mexico and served in the Navy during the Korean War. He received his Bachelor of Arts and Master’s degrees in art from University of New Mexico under the GI Bill. He was an accomplished artist and served as museum director and curator at the Roswell Museum and Art Center, University of Oregon Museum of Art, Boise Art Museum, the Salt Lake City Art Center and the South Dakota Art Museum at South Dakota State University where he was also professor of art history.

Stuart, Signe Margaret was born on December 3, 1937 in New London, Connecticut, United States. Daughter of Carl Einar and Anna Louise (Gustafson) Nelson. Married Joseph Stuart, June 18, 1960.
