Abstract
The Department of Horticulture, Forestry, Landscape and Parks offered instruction leading to the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree with majors in horticulture, landscape design, and park management. The collection is composed of a herbarium and plant analysis ledger and general office records produced by the Department of Horticulture, Forestry, Landscape and Parks within the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences at South Dakota State University.
Historical Note
In 1887, the Department of Horticulture and Forestry was first established as a unit in the college and the newly organized experiment station. The department was one of the original departments of the college. Early research was involved with windbreak trees, orchard fruits, small fruits, vegetables and ornamental trees and shrubs and was put to practical use throughout South Dakota. Research in horticulture, forestry, and landscape design and parks management has continued to be an integral part of the department throughout the years. In the mid-1980's, the department name was changed to Department of Horticulture, Forestry, Landscape and Parks. The Department of Horticulture, Forestry, Landscape and Parks offers instruction leading to the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree with majors in horticulture, landscape design, and park management.
The department was merged with the Department of Plant Science in the summer of 2011.
Contents Note
Composed of publications produced by the Horticulture, Forestry, Landscape and Parks Department. Material included newsletters, programs, certificates, record books, clippings, info-sheets, surveys, pamphlets, and a survey.
Also included is a botany ledger used to teach the manes of plants and study plant anatomy. Included are descriptions of the plant and a plant sample pressed between the pages. This ledger was most likely compiled by a student, although there is no distinct evidence to that.
Researchers are urged to view this material with care as the pages are loose and the plant samples are very fragile and contain allergens.
Folders are arranged in alphabetical order.
