Abstract

The Faculty Housing Company, Inc., was founded to help ease the critical housing shortage in Brookings, and to make housing available to new faculty members at a reasonable rental. The records contain primarily meeting minutes, stock holder information, promotional materials and letters written to stockholders from incorporation in 1952 to dissolution in 1963.

Historical Note

In the fall of 1952, a group of interested faculty members with the active support of the administration, decided – in view of the growth of the South Dakota State College – to make more housing facilities available. A private stock corporation was organized for the purpose of acquiring a site and erecting one or more apartment buildings for rental, primarily to faculty members. The corporation was developed with the aid of the Federal Housing Administration. The corporation owned two six-unit apartments located north of Sixth Street between 16th and 17th avenue, across from Hillcrest Park. The company lasted until a special meeting was held on January 21, 1963 where the stockholders voted for dissolution of the Corporation.

Contents Note

The Faculty Housing Company records are composed primarily of meeting minutes (annual, special, and board of directors meetings), stock holder information, and letters written to stockholders from incorporation in 1952 to dissolution in 1963. The collection also includes advertisement brochures and signs of the company, correspondences with stockholders, floor plans of the corporation’s property, and quarterly reports.
