Name: Miah Schallenkamp

Hometown: Bridgewater

Site: Brookings

What motivated you to choose a career in nursing: I've always had a passion for caring for others, and the medical field has always been an interest of mine. I combined the two together and found my dream career.

Why did you choose SDSU to pursue your nursing degree: I chose South Dakota State University to purse my nursing degree because of its prestigious reputation and ranking as well as the opportunities the program provides for me to grow and learn as a nursing student. It also helps that many of my family members are SDSU alumni. Go Jacks!

What clinical experience have you enjoyed the most and why: The clinical experience I have enjoyed the most (so far) has been my advanced medical/supply critical thinking and advance my skill set. Through my OB clinical, I have been able to work in the field I'd like to pursue after graduation.

Organizations that you are involved in: I am involved in Ceres Women's Fraternity, Student Nurses Association, Choralia (SDSU Women's Choir) and Youth Group.

Is there a particular field of nursing you are planning to pursue: Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) or labor and delivery.

What is your big dream: My big dream as a nurse is to work at a hospital that will constantly challenge my critical thinking and skill set. I am also considering graduate school to become either a physician's assistant (PA) or a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), but for now I'm just focusing on graduating with my bachelor's degree.

What advice would you share with a future nursing student: Embrace and take advantage of every opportunity you are provided with. I promise, you'll learn something new every time!
