#MeetSDStateNursing—Mariah Pistorius

Mariah Pistorius

What motivated you to choose a career in nursing?

As long as I remember, I have always had a passion to further my education to purse a nursing degree. Nurses were a big part of my life when I was born and placed in the NICU. Hearing stories about those days from my parents motivates me to give back and become a nurse, just like those who helped me be here today.

Is there a particular field of nursing you are planning to pursue?

The one area of interest that I’m planning on pursuing when I graduate in Dec. 2022 is NICU, however, my mind is still open to other areas such as PICU, pediatrics or labor and delivery.

What is your big dream?

After graduating and gaining experience within my chosen specialty, my future goal is to be a travel nurse for that particular specialty for a couple of years then return to settle on a unit.

What advice would you share with future nursing students?

Advice that I would give to a future nursing student is to believe in yourself, for you have the ability to pursue your dreams, even when you feel like nothing is going your way. Hard work pays off! One thing that keeps me going is the saying, “everything happens for a reason!”
