#MeetSDStateNursing—Ashley Eskins

Ashley Eskins

Name: Ashley Eskins

Hometown: Yankton

Site: Brookings

What motivated you to choose a career in nursing? My mom and my late aunt who are both nurses. I have always enjoyed taking care of people, and I have always found it rewarding to take care of patients.

Why did you choose SDSU to pursue your nursing degree? South Dakota State University has one of the top nursing programs in the state and I knew once I toured campus, it felt like my home away from home.

What clinical experience have you enjoyed the most and why? I have enjoyed OB/postpartum/labor and delivery the most. I have enjoyed these the most because that is a field I am particularly interested in. I got to experience two births and learn about how to care for mothers before and after labor and delivery and it’s truly such a special field.

Is there a particular field of nursing you are planning to pursue? BABIES! I have wanted to work with babies or mothers postpartum ever since I could remember. I was born premature and spent some days in the neonatal intensive care unite, and that field has always had a special place in my heart.·

What is your big dream? My big dream is to just be the nurse I always dreamed of! I want to follow in the footsteps of my aunt and mom and be the best nurse I can be. My dream is to work with babies and help bring new life into this world.

What advice would you share with a future nursing student? I would tell future nursing students to never give up no matter how many bumps comedown your road. Nursing school is not going to be easy, but if you think about the light at the end of the tunnel, you will get there. Use your friends and your resources and take it one day at a time! Keep your eye on the prize. You’ll do amazing things.
