History of the School of Psychology, Sociology and Rural Studies

South Dakota State University has launched its School of Psychology, Sociology and Rural Studies as of July 1, 2021. The addition is the sixth school in its College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Paul Markel has been named the school’s founding director and joins SDSU from Minot State University where he served as chair of addiction studies, psychology and school psychology. The department of Psychology was established in 1968, while the department of Sociology was established in 1925.
