Tuba/Euphonium Studio

Greetings from the Tuba and Euphonium Studio!

Regardless of your major, if you love playing your instrument there is a place for you. Tuba and euphonium players can perform in a wide range of ensembles:

Music majors and minors take one on one instruction with Dr. Kessler. Lessons are available for anyone else if there is availability in the studio schedule. Tuba/euphonium studio members take part in about six Friday afternoon masterclasses per semester. In these masterclasses, student see and hear each other play, hear professional artists and learn techniques to take their playing to another level.

About Dr. Kessler

Kevin Kessler is an Instructor of Music and Director of Athletic Bands at SDSU, where he directs the Pride of the Dakotas Marching Band, Pep Band and Concert Band. He also teaches Conducting 1, Theory 1 and Applied Euphonium and Tuba. Dr. Kessler earned his B.M.E. from South Dakota State University, where he studied trumpet and conducting with John Colson. He earned his M.M. from the American Band College of Southern Oregon University, and a D.M.A. in Band Conducting with a minor in Music Education from the University of Iowa, where he studied conducting with Dr. Richard Mark Heidel, arranging and marching band drill design with Mr. Kevin Kastens and euphonium with Mr. John Manning. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Kessler served as a band director for 14 years in the Brandon Valley, South Dakota school district, where his concert and marching bands consistently earned top rankings and ratings at region and national contests.

Dr. Kessler is an active arranger and marching band drill designer. His drill design was featured at the 2015 Taxslayer Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida, and his musical arrangements are played by several college marching bands across the country. He is also active as an adjudicator, clinician and guest conductor. Dr. Kessler holds memberships in Phi Beta Mu, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, South Dakota Bandmasters, College Band Directors National Association, the National Association for Music Education and the National Education Association.
