DeVaney Fellows Scholarship Initiative

Setting a New National Standard for Teacher Preparation and Prestige

The DeVaney Fellows Scholarship is a premier scholarship and professional development initiative within the College of Education and Human Sciences at South Dakota State University. As a nationally unique initiative, the program is designed to support exceptional future educators by providing four years of continuous financial and academic support spanning across two distinct degrees of study.

Named in honor of Sharon Lohr DeVaney's commitment to education, student success and lifelong learning, the program reflects a belief that investing in teachers is one of the most powerful ways to strengthen schools and communities across South Dakota.

The Purpose of the Scholarship

The scholarship initiative follows a highly selective cohort model, choosing exactly 20 concurrent students: our top five juniors, top five seniors and top five first-year graduate students.

Fellows enter through undergraduate education programs and are seamlessly slotted directly into M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction or agricultural education for graduate schools. This structured pipeline provides unbroken mentorship and financial support from undergraduate preparation straight through the critical first years of professional teaching.

Why the DeVaney Fellows Scholarship Matters

Future educators face significant financial and professional challenges as they move from university coursework into student teaching and ultimately into full-time classroom positions. At the same time, schools throughout South Dakota continue to seek talented, well-prepared teachers who will remain and thrive in the profession.

The Sharon DeVaney Fellows Scholarship addresses these challenges by providing:

  • Financial support during undergraduate teacher preparation

About Sharon Lohr DeVaney

DeVaney grew up in South Dakota, but she lived for 12 years overseas as an Air Force wife. Her career has included the following highlights: South Dakota champion speller in the 8th grade, a Top Ten Freshmen Woman at South Dakota State College (later SDSU) in 1958; B.S. and M.S. at the university in 1961 and 1969, respectively, an A.A. in computer studies from the University of Maryland Global Campus, Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 1993, professor at Purdue University for 15 years, and editor of the Family and Consumer Sciences Research Journal for 12 years.

Early Life and Career

DeVaney grew up on a farm near Clark. Her father was seriously injured in a farm accident when she was a senior in high school. Her two older brothers were away at college. DeVaney became her father’s right hand man for the next 11 months until she began her studies at South Dakota State University (then South Dakota State College). As she worked with her father, DeVaney developed a deep appreciation for anyone coping with a disability.

During her four years at SDSU, DeVaney served as a senior counselor. She was the home economics coordinator for Little International, and she was named to Who’s Who. In June 1961, DeVaney graduated first in the home economics division of 57 students and second in the graduating class of 700 students. She met her future husband, Jim DeVaney, when both were freshmen. Jim DeVaney was majoring in civil engineering, enrolled in ROTC and on a football scholarship. Jim DeVaney graduated in March of 1962. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force. For the next 30 years, his career as a pilot and civil engineer dominated their life.

When they were overseas, Sharon DeVaney taught in the Department of Defense dependent schools in Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. She also taught for four years at Rose State College in Midwest City, Oklahoma. During her husband’s last assignment, DeVaney earned the PhD at the Ohio State University. Her dissertation topic was “Using Financial Ratios to Predict Household Insolvency.” She became a faculty member at Purdue University in August 1993. Her research focus was on retirement planning, credit use, entrepreneurship and women’s financial issues. She retired in 2008 as a Professor Emerita.

The couple built a home near Monument, Colorado. Sadly, her husband suffered a fatal heart attack 10 months after Sharon DeVaney’s retirement. Fortunately, Sharon DeVaney had signed a contract to become the editor of the Family & Consumer Sciences Research Journal three weeks before her husband’s death. In addition, DeVaney became a volunteer for three organizations: a docent for the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center; a public member for the Liaison Committee for Medical Education; and one of six surviving spouses for the Military Officers of America Association.

In July of 2017, DeVaney moved to Sioux Falls. She and her husband had three children. Natalie DeVaney teaches nursing at the College of San Mateo in California. Nicole DeVaney teaches 7th grade science in Colorado. James, Jr., DeVaney (Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Air Force, retired) works for the Air Force in Oklahoma City.
