SDState Online Master of Mass Communication degree provides a professional education to develop mass communication skills that help advance you toward your goals and expand your skill set in the workplace. Our program is designed for working journalists and professional communicators as well as those seeking to further develop their professional communication skills.

We work to help those in communication become better at what they do by bringing them up to speed with the new media skills necessary in the profession today.  Our program provides a quality professional education accessible to working journalists and strategic communicators, and is accredited by The Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

Whether in print, broadcast, advertising and marketing or public relations, students build skills and credentials for success.

Interaction with peers is an integral part of any graduate program. A cohort (or group of students) starts the program and take most classes together. We schedule classes for 8-week sessions, which run back-to-back during the school year. By taking two eight-week classes back-to-back each semester and one each summer, students can finish the program in just under two years.  Students who complete a Professional Project (Option B) for their degree will take 32 total credits in the program.  Working professionals may consider taking additional coursework (Option C) for a total of 36 credits and a professional portfolio requirement.

Class size is typically about 15 students, and 50 percent or more of the courses each student takes must be skills-based. Classwork for this degree is available 24/7. Online discussion and lectures substitute for face-to-face traditional instruction and internet-based course software functions as a virtual classroom for students and instructors who can participate at any time, from anywhere.

Once students are admitted to the program, they have supportive faculty who will help them get their degree. Faculty post lectures and assignments; students turn in papers and tests and discuss their work with classmates online.

Our program has received the Outstanding Online Program Award from SDSU for the past four years and we are also ranked 8th in 2017 by CollegeValuesOnline, third by, and both OnlineU and ranked us 7th among online communication degrees.
