Themed Housing

Themed housing is available to students who share common interests and who desire a community-focused living environment that is based around those interests. There are currently five themes at SDSU: Oyate Yuwitaya Tipi, Performing Arts, Quiet Lifestyle, Transfer Student and Upper Division Student.

Oyate Yuwitaya Tipi (The Tribes/Peoples Live Together)

The Oyate Yuwitaya Tipi (OYT) is a community of Native and non-Native peoples who will be provided with opportunities to enhance their understandings of the diverse histories, contexts, cultures, and experiences of American Indian and Alaskan Native peoples. Founded upon the principles of respect, reciprocity, responsibility and kinship, our purpose is to be a living-learning environment that fosters educational success, nurtures student leadership, promotes solidarity and honorably acknowledges the Dakota, Lakota and Nakota nations of South Dakota.

Performing Arts

This themed community is designed for students that have an interest in performance arts. This community is open to any first-year and second-year student. Students are not required to have a performance arts related major to live in this community; it is for students that have a shared interest in theatre, instrumental and vocal music or other forms of performance art.

Quiet Lifestyle

This themed community provides a quiet environment for students wanting an atmosphere that is conducive to studying and sleep. Quiet hours begin at 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and at 10:00pm Friday and Saturday nights. There is also a heightened awareness of courtesy hours to not engage in "loud" activities that can interrupt your neighbors' right to sleep, study and not be disturbed.

Transfer Student

This is an excellent opportunity for students who transfer to SDSU to connect with other transfer students and ease their transition to SDSU. Focused opportunities to learn about resources, traditions, connecting with academic staff and more will be priorities for programs and other opportunities for transfer students living in this community.

Upper Division

Rooms for upper division students in Hansen Hall will be designed for single occupancy; each room will be furnished with one bed, one dresser, one desk and one desk chair. These rooms are available for sophomore, junior and senior (2018 or earlier high school graduates) students.
