Upward Mobility (MLT to MLS)

The Upward Mobility Program provides an opportunity for Medical Laboratory Technicians to complete a bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science within their own clinical employment setting, utilizing a variety of online instructional approaches. The program includes a variety of courses including Hematology and Hemostasis, Diagnostic Immunology, Clinical Chemistry, and Diagnostic Microbiology. Clinical practice is also central to the program. Graduates will be eligible to take the certification examination as a medical laboratory scientist from the Board of Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.

Admission Criteria

NOTE: Students MUST be admitted to SDSU in order to be eligible for admission to the Upward Mobility Program.

In order to be considered for admission to the Upward Mobility program for Medical Laboratory Science, the student must successfully meet all admission criteria listed below. 

  • Completion of an associate degree and certified as a CLT/MLT or equivalent.
  • Grade of "C" or "70%" minimum in all prerequisite courses.
  • Employed in a TJC/CAP/COLA/CLIA laboratory, capable of providing a multidisciplinary laboratory experience.
  • Statement of support from current laboratory employer (Laboratory Director/Supervisor).
  • Minimum of 2 years clinical laboratory experience. Students may begin general program preparation as a pre-MLS Upward Mobility student at any time following completion of their associate degree.
  • Access to a computer and the internet (preferably high speed access), including Microsoft Office for word processing, spreadsheet, and database needs.

Application Checklist

The applicants must submit the following for admission to the Upward Mobility Program:

  1. Completed admission to South Dakota State University, including submission of all official transcripts.
  2. Submission of the online Upward Mobility application form.
  3. Statement of Support from employer and any additional sponsors required for the completion of the clinical competency portion within the program.
  4. Primary Facilitator/Preceptor form
