The SDSU dissertation fellowships are designed to recruit and support the early development of scholars from underrepresented communities completing dissertation research, and who show promise of distinguished research careers. In accord with these goals, scholars can take advantage of SDSU programs and faculty expertise and have access to libraries and the resources of the South Dakota region.
Length of Fellowship: 1 year Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to persons in disciplines in which people from diverse communities have been traditionally underrepresented and to persons who have significant experience in educational programs and environments characterized by a strong emphasis on diversity, multiculturalism and inclusion. Applicants must be dissertation stage doctoral degree candidates.
Excellence in teaching, research/creative activity and service is expected.
- Teach one course each semester in an area related to their academic preparation and a need of the department hosting the fellow.
- Devote significant time to the completion of the dissertation.
- Opportunity to be paired with a faculty mentor.
- Present their research at university and professional venues.
Fellows will receive academic year faculty appointments, an annual salary of $30,000, plus basic health benefits, office space (contingent upon departmental availability), support for research, professional travel, and other related expenses. It is expected that fellows will not be employed outside of the University or receive additional fellowships or awards during the fellowship period, unless approved by the University.

Awards will be made for study in a field taught at SDSU, housed in the following six academic Colleges:
- College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences
- College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences
- College of Education and Human Sciences
- College of Nursing
- College of Pharmacy
- Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering
